Synopsis
A deserter from the Night’s Watch is captured outside Winterfell and swiftly executed by Lord Eddard “Ned” Stark, raising concerns about dangers beyond the Wall. Upon returning home, Ned learns from his wife, Catelyn, that his mentor, Jon Arryn, has died in King’s Landing. Soon after, King Robert Baratheon arrives in the North to offer Ned the position of the King’s Hand.
Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea in Pentos, Viserys Targaryen plots to reclaim the Iron Throne. He arranges a political alliance by marrying his sister, Daenerys, to the powerful Dothraki leader, Khal Drogo.
As Robert visits Winterfell, he brings his wife, Queen Cersei Lannister, her twin brother Jaime, their younger brother Tyrion, and her son Joffrey, the heir to the throne. Unable to refuse his old friend, Ned prepares to leave for King’s Landing. At the same time, his illegitimate son, Jon Snow, sets out for Castle Black to join the Night’s Watch, accompanied by Tyrion. However, a shocking act of betrayal against young Bran Stark threatens to disrupt their plans.
